Part VI: Chapter 19

Mary Shelley's hands trembled. Finally, she had a moment to herself in the kitchen but only after the trays had been set with a spoon for porridge, along with a cloth napkin and a tin cup of powdered milk. She went to a far corner, underneath a window where a spot of light shone and opened the thickest envelope with a knife. When she looked inside, her heart leaped; there were more bills than she had ever seen. Sir Winterbottom had not lied. She thumbed the crisp paper and hastened a guess that there was over three thousand pounds, more than she would earn in years. Her first thought was to purchase a fancy wardrobe and to rent a larger place with two bedrooms that her mother might stay with her. Her second thought was how wealth of any kind does not come without a price. Mary Shelley hid the cash in her pocket. She continued feeling the stressed rhythm of her heart in her ears, looking ahead to ensure no one was around. Sir Winterbottom's words were fresh: Do not speak a word to anyone. And not a word would be uttered, not one bloody word. She wanted the money. He had said, "You will be handsomely compensated for your trouble," and he was right. Never would she have imagined such a fortune being dropped into her lap. Women of her kind accepted their lot in life of long hours of unforgiving labour standing on sore feet.

She knew well enough to follow his advice and hold off buying anything until much time had passed, but how much? How long could she wait before succumbing to the temptation to spend just a little? A new winter coat would surely keep out the cold. A new pair of boots would mean her toes would not go numb every time she walked to her place of employment. Her inner voice was reassuring: she would be wise to maintain appearances and not spend any amount until much time had passed. Her thoughts in regard to how best to manage the money so distracted her that she forgot entirely about the second envelope; her hand perspired from holding onto it. When she sliced it open and unfolded the single sheet of parchment neatly folded into three even parts, she was struck by the beauty of the paper. The penmanship flowed like ancient script with flamboyant curly cues and winding tails at the beginning and end of each sentence; this was handwriting that belonged in an old book in a museum.

Inside the envelope was a small pouch with ground powder that smelled unfamiliar to her, a letter as well as a second note; a tiny three-inch-square piece of paper. Mary wiped the sweat off her upper lip and looked up again, just to be safe. She held the letter closer to the window; her lips moved as she read silently:
